Dental Radiography

At Naranja Pediatric Dentistry, we use digital X-rays to get a clearer picture of your child’s dental health, like early cavities between teeth, how adult teeth are forming, or if a baby tooth is blocking the path.

The process takes just seconds, uses minimal radiation, and gives us sharp, detailed images we can review with you right away.

What Is Dental Radiography?

Dental radiography refers to the use of X-ray images to examine areas of the mouth that aren’t visible during a routine exam. This includes the spaces between teeth, the roots below the gumline, and the jaw and developing adult teeth.

There are two main types of dental X-rays:

  • Traditional X-rays use film to capture images. They’ve been a standard for decades but take longer to develop and use more radiation than newer methods.
  • Digital X-rays are the modern standard. They use a small sensor and display the images almost instantly on a screen. Digital imaging also exposes children to significantly less radiation—up to 80–90% less—making it a safer and faster option.

Our team uses digital radiography to make the experience smoother, safer, and more comfortable for your child.

When Are Dental X-Rays Necessary?

Dental X-rays aren’t taken at every visit. The need depends on a child’s age, dental history, and specific concerns.

They’re often recommended to:

  • Check for cavities between teeth
  • Monitor the growth of permanent teeth
  • Evaluate jaw development
  • Investigate pain, swelling, or trauma

Are Dental X-Rays Safe for Children?

Dental X-rays are considered very safe, especially when digital technology is used. Children are only exposed to a small amount of radiation, and protective tools like lead aprons and thyroid collars are always used to add an extra layer of safety.

When used thoughtfully, the benefits of early diagnosis far outweigh the minimal risk.

Do Baby Teeth Need X-Rays If They’re Going to Fall Out Anyway?

Even though they eventually fall out, baby teeth may need dental radiography because they affect overall dental development.

X-rays help detect cavities that may not be visible during an exam. They also show how adult teeth are forming beneath the surface and help us ensure baby teeth are guiding those new teeth into the correct position.
