Dental Crowns

A stainless steel crown is a durable, child-friendly restoration used to protect and restore a tooth after extensive decay or pulpotomy (nerve treatment).

Right After the Appointment

If local anesthesia was used, the lips, cheek, and tongue may remain numb for 1–3 hours.

  • Closely watch your child to prevent accidental biting or chewing of these areas.
  • Do not allow eating solid food until the numbness wears off.

Eating and Drinking

Once the numbness has worn off:

  • Offer soft foods for the first few hours (e.g., yogurt, mashed potatoes, pasta).
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods (like gum, caramels, taffy, ice, or hard candy) for at least 24 hours, and ideally long-term.
  • Encourage chewing on the opposite side of the mouth for the rest of the day, if possible.

Mild Discomfort or Sensitivity

Some children may experience mild gum soreness or sensitivity around the crowned tooth for 1–2 days. This is normal and usually improves quickly.

Use children’s ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed for age/weight if needed.

Oral Hygiene

  • Keep brushing and flossing as normal, even around the crown.
  • Gently clean near the gumline to prevent irritation or infection.
  • Encourage good brushing habits to help the crown last and the gums stay healthy.

What to Expect

  • The crown may feel "different" or slightly high when your child first bites down. This usually settles as your child adjusts within a day or two.
  • The crown is cemented in place permanently but is designed to come out naturally with the baby tooth when it's time.
  • The success of the treatment will be monitored at each 6-month check up!

Call Our Office If You Notice

  • The crown comes off or feels loose
  • Your child has persistent pain or swelling in the area
  • There is bleeding or signs of infection (pus, foul odor)
  • Your child continues to avoid chewing on one side after several days.
