Dental Local Anesthesia

The mouth will be numb for approximately two to four hours. Watch to see that your child does not bite, scratch, or injure the cheek, lips, or tongue during this time. Wait until the numbness wears off before offering solid foods.

Liquids such as water, diluted juice, or smoothies may be offered as soon as your child leaves the office. Other soft foods (applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup) may also be offered. Avoid hot foods or drinks for 4–6 hours post-procedure.

Self-inflicted Bite Injuries

Sometimes, children accidentally bite the inside of their lip, cheek, or tongue while the area is still numb. This can cause swelling, pain, or even a sore that looks worse than it feels.

What to Do

  • Stay calm and reassure your child. The area will usually heal on its own within 7–10 days.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face (e.g., cheek or lip) for 10–15 minutes at a time, a few times a day, for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
  • Offer cold soft foods (e.g., ice cream, yogurt, smoothies) to soothe the area.
  • Keep the area clean by rinsing gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water) starting the next day.
  • Give age-appropriate pain relief (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) if your child is uncomfortable.
  • Avoid salty, spicy, or acidic foods that can irritate the sore.

What to Avoid

  • Do not let your child continue to touch, rub, or chew on the sore.
  • Avoid using topical numbing gels unless specifically advised by the dentist. They can be harmful if swallowed.

Call the Dentist If

  • The area becomes very swollen, red, or develops pus (signs of infection)
  • Your child has a fever
  • The wound does not start to improve within 3–5 days
  • Your child is in significant pain that isn’t relieved by over-the-counter medication
