Cavities often start in the hard-to-clean grooves of molars, but there’s an easy way to help stop them before they begin. Dental sealants offer lasting protection for these vulnerable teeth, giving parents a smart, preventive option to support their kids' long-term oral health.
What Are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, specifically the molars. These teeth have deep grooves and pits that can be hard to keep clean, even with regular brushing. Sealants create a smooth barrier over those areas, making it easier to keep bacteria and food particles out.
During the appointment, we’ll gently clean and dry the teeth being sealed. A special gel is applied for a few seconds to prepare the surface, then rinsed away. Once the tooth is dry again, the sealant material is painted onto the grooves of the molar and cured with a light to help it harden.
The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth, and there’s no need for drilling or anesthesia.

At What Age Should a Child Get Sealants?
Sealants are most effective when placed on permanent molars shortly after they come in.
For most children, the first set of molars appears around age 6, and the second set comes in around age 12. Applying sealants during these stages can help protect those teeth through the most cavity-prone years.
In some cases, we may recommend sealants on baby teeth, especially if they have deep grooves or are at higher risk for decay.
Are Dental Sealants Safe?
Yes, dental sealants are a safe and trusted form of preventive care. They've been used in pediatric dentistry for decades and are widely recommended by the American Dental Association and approved by the FDA.
The resin materials used are also biocompatible and designed to stay firmly in place while being gentle on young mouths.

How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?
Sealants can last several years—often five or more—depending on your child’s chewing habits and oral hygiene.
During pediatric check-ups, we’ll monitor the condition of the sealants and reapply them if they begin to wear down. Keeping up with dental visits helps ensure continued protection.
