How Does General Anesthesia Work?
General anesthesia works by temporarily blocking sensation and awareness throughout the entire body. It’s administered through a mask or IV, allowing the patient to sleep comfortably and remain still during the procedure.
Breathing, heart rate, and other vital signs are closely monitored the entire time to ensure safety.
Post-Op Instructions for General Anesthesia
- Let Them Rest: Plan for quiet time at home. Drowsiness is normal and expected after anesthesia, so make sure they have a safe, comfortable spot to rest.
- Hydration First, Then Soft Foods: Start with clear liquids like water or diluted juice. Once alert and sipping well, introduce soft foods like applesauce, yogurt, or soup.
- Avoid Chewing Until Numbness Wears Off: Numbness can linger for a few hours. To avoid accidental biting of the cheek, lip, or tongue, wait to offer anything that requires chewing.
- Monitor Breathing and Alertness: Sleepiness is common, but they should be breathing comfortably and easy to wake. Let us know right away if anything seems unusual.
- Expect Minor Nausea: Some queasiness is a normal side effect. Keep meals light for the rest of the day. If vomiting persists beyond a couple of times, contact a healthcare provider.
- Limit Physical Activity: Encourage quiet time for the first 24 hours. Running, jumping, or active play should wait until the next morning to allow the body time to fully recover.
- Mild Discomfort is Normal: Some soreness in the mouth or jaw may occur. Over-the-counter children’s pain relievers can help. Please follow dosage instructions.
- No Straws or Spitting: They can interfere with healing, especially if extractions were involved.
